Connecting Clara to ChatGPT

Connect Clara to ChatGPT and you can ask about your calls, messages, and customers right inside a chat. You can also make changes, like adding a special instruction to your receptionist, and Clara will ask you to confirm before anything is saved.

You’ll need a paid ChatGPT plan: the free plan doesn’t support custom connections like Clara. (We’ve tested with ChatGPT Pro.) If you use ChatGPT through your company, an admin may need to turn this on first. You’ll also need to turn on Developer mode in ChatGPT’s settings, and we’ll walk you through that below.

Connecting Clara to an AI assistant is part of Clara Pro.

You’ll paste this link during setup:

You’ll find it on the ChatGPT page under Integrations in Clara on the web too, where the same steps are laid out with screenshots and the link is ready to copy.

Connect Clara

One heads up before you start: ChatGPT changes these menus often, so what you see might look a little different. Look in Settings for the option that manages MCP servers.

  1. Open Settings. Open ChatGPT, the desktop app or the web app at chatgpt.com, and go to Settings.
  2. Open Plugins, then MCPs. Open Plugins, then switch to the MCPs tab.
  3. Add a server. Click + Add server.
  4. Fill in the details. Name it “Clara”, set Type to Streamable HTTP, and paste the link above. Leave the Bearer token and Headers fields empty. Clara takes care of signing you in.
  5. Save. Clara shows up in your server list with an Authenticate button next to it.
  6. Authenticate. Click Authenticate, which opens Clara’s sign-in page.
  7. Sign in with your email. Enter your email, then the 6-digit code Clara sends you. Once you’re in, the Authenticate button disappears.
  8. Turn on Developer mode. This one’s on the ChatGPT website (chatgpt.com): go to Settings, then Security and login, then Developer mode, and switch it on. ChatGPT calls it “elevated risk” because it covers every custom connection you’ve added, but Clara only ever sees your own Clara account.
  9. Start chatting with Clara. In any chat, on the app or the web, tap the + button, make sure Clara is turned on, and just ask.

Now try this

Some things to ask once you’re connected:

“List my Clara inquiries from today.”

“Which of my inquiries are urgent right now?”

“Show me everything Clara knows about [customer name].”

“Add a follow-up text asking customers to leave a review after their call.”

Anything that changes your Clara setup, like replying to a customer or editing your receptionist, will ask you to confirm first.

Clara connects using the Model Context Protocol (MCP), an open standard for AI assistants.

Frequently asked questions

ChatGPT says it can't access Clara, even though Clara shows as connected

Turn on Developer mode: on chatgpt.com, go to Settings, then Security and login, then Developer mode, and switch it on. Then ask Clara again in a new chat. Existing chats won't pick up the change.

I don't see Plugins, or there's no MCPs tab

You're probably on the free plan, which doesn't support this, or your workspace admin hasn't turned it on yet. Worth asking them.

ChatGPT says it can't reach Clara right after I connect

Give it a minute and try again. A brand-new connection sometimes needs a moment to kick in.

The Authenticate button won't go away

Make sure you finished entering the 6-digit code on Clara's sign-in page before closing that window.

It only asks for an email code, no password?

That's right, that's just how signing in to Clara works today. No password, and no Google or Apple sign-in yet.

It won't save, and says it couldn't connect

Double-check the link is typed exactly right, including the /mcp at the end, and that Type is set to Streamable HTTP.

I'm connected, but my inbox looks empty

You're connected fine, that account just doesn't have any calls or customers in it yet. Try signing in with the Clara account you actually use.
